33 Variations

How quickly 2 months flew by.
I got a chance to be involved in something I never thought I would.

33 Variations is a play by Moises Kaufman, about a musicologist with motor neuron disease  discovering why Beethoven wrote 33 variations on Anton Diabelli's simple waltz. Her deterioration in health parallels Beethoven's loss of his hearing and decay in health.

Williamstown Little Theatre (www.wlt.org.au) is a compact theatrical society in Williamstown. Its a very compact theatre that probably only holds about 30 people in the audience.

This Alex Steinbach piano was rented for this play. I don't think I've played one of them before - the stiffness of the keys was challenging to my hand muscles.

The cast were all down to earth and nice. Chris the director was amazing. He had an immaculate attention to detail.

I learnt many things during my 6 weeks with the crew.

Transfiguration. The art of acting. What is their normal self, and what is acting? Where is the line?
I watched as a friendly, passive sounding middle age woman transform into a strong willed music professor.
I watched as a collected, smiling professor turn into a raging, psychotic composer.
I admired their poise, their professionalism.
The way they all spoke with an American accent, German accent.
The way they carried themselves
The way they can burst out from emotion to emotion.
Their body language, facial expression, gaze.

It get all too real at times.

After all the rehearsals and 16 performances, I still get emotional from looking at their performances.

Passion.

The dedication and passion in everyone involved.
Their love for theatre
Its funny.
It was very clear to me the all performers, have a bond of some sort.
I saw, for the first time, why actors <--> musicians <--> singers <--> dancers <--> athletes
The mixture of skills
the ability
to carry yourself, yours whole self
with confidence, without doubt
to convince others
that you are someone else
the emotions
whether it is through my fingers, turning notes into music
through their speech, turning words into tales
on their faces, morphing muscles into emotions
every move, thought, calculated.
bringing a character
to life.

Its funny. As clueless as I am about acting, the theory of performing, their performing, resonates with me.
To maintain focus on the situation at hand, interacting with those on stage
mustering my emotions, mentally, to convey my feelings through music.
learning my notes
to carry on if mistakes are made
covering it up.

I do the same things too. Except with just my fingers.

This is the after production party.
Its easy to see that this is a group of people, living in the moment.
For them, it was a production finished, a chapter closed.
Celebrating what has been created
Triumphing in the current achievements
tomorrow
They will move on to their next project
their next play
their next gig
creating new memories
forming new groups.

For me,
it was the closure of one chapter
the time I dedicated 2 months of my life
doing something I have never done before.
It could be a new beginning, the first of many
or it could be a treasured memory, hopeful to repeat itself again.
