Loss

You never know what you'd miss until you've lost it.

Mum's friend is now in hospital ICU for severe asthma attack - she's not going to make it. They are turning off life support tomorrow.

Apparently she called her youngest son to help her. When he got home (after breaking into the house cos he forgot his keys), she was alreay unconscious. He then called his elder brother, who is a doctor, who then called the ambulance to get his mum.

I spoke to him just now, and he told me that he should have taken today off. He regrets being bla-zee about his mum's illnesses and not really paying attention to her. Until it is now too late.

What i find the most painful is that in her last moments - after calling her son and falling unconscious due to not being able to breathe - she was all alone. At home.

And it is severely painful to imagine if something like that would happen to mum. Cos she is also home alone.

For those of you who has never had an asthma attack before, take a deep breath and hold it. And then try to breath more. And not being able to exhale the air you breathed in. And yet you need more air. And you breathe more. but u still can't breathe out.

Imagine doing that until you collapse unconscious, all by yourself...

David, the son, reminded me something that we should all remember:

Our work is always going to be therefore us. In my case, there are going to be patients in the hospital all the time. If we take 1 day off, the hospital will function. However we only have one family, one mother, one loved one. And that one day will mean so much to them.

Never feel that work is more important and that you can't get out of it, no matter what.

Not for your friends, not for your family, not for yourself.

I hope the best for you, aunty janet.
