Thesis: BestFriend101
Introduction
I have a new theory.
I think the theory that all friends are more or less attracted to each other in some way e.g. personality, looks, ideas etc is pretty much accepted.
I also think that the better friends you are with a person, the more attracted you are to each other.
And therefore, best friends are essentially 2 people who are very attracted to each other. And by attracted i mean in all ways - ideas, personality, looks.
When you read about/see in movies/see in real life those people who are best friends and do things that really moves each other (e.g. obito gives kakashi his eye as a present) and are able to happily make sacrifices for each other. we think these are great virtues if they come from a friend, especially your best friend.
However, if they come a lover, then we think its pretty much accepted. For example, if Sakura was to offer sasuke her eyes (not that he'll ever want that, but hey), then the rest of us will think "ohhh...she's in love, duh!" as in comparison to the obito and kakashi situation (yeayea, sakura and sasuke r not best friends, i know, i'm jus showing what love means).
(for those non-naruto readers, sorry - but that's the only comparison i can think of now. For more info, i greatly recommend checking out http://www.narutofan.com/ in the manga section where 260 chapters of manga will bring you up to date with the situation here. Alternatively 126 episodes of 170mb anime episodes will give you a different but more satisfying effect too.)
So what's my theory? My theory is that best friends are 2 people who are essentially lovers but just fall short of being lovers in some way e.g. they are of the same sex, they are both in different relationships, they are related, they are far apart...
1. They are of the same sex
2. They are both in different relationships
3. They are related
4. They are far apart.
Conclusion
My conclusion is that best friends are 2 persons who, because of complications of time, people and place, are unable to consummate their relationship by taking it up a notch into love. This is not to say that the guy who has a crush on you is your best friend. Best friend has to work both ways - the girl that has the crush on you, for example, may "love" you for a certain period of time - but because she is not positively encouraged by your actions i.e. loving her back and doing the "special" things for her that you wouldn't do for normal friends, she will soon stop being a "friend" and stop "loving" you.
Therefore best friends have to be a two way relationship.
Best friends come just short of love.

Ahh...so when i'm saying that i want to find a best friend
I'm effectively saying that i'm looking for love.
Gawd....i'm bawling around in circles..........(=___=")

1. They are of the same sex
- If you believe in the Kinsey scale, then its easy to see that best friends can find each other attractive. Even though this is masked by society and cultural expectations, one can still see examples e.g. the closeness girls have with each other when they check out the density and bounciness of each other's breasts (Akamatsu, Ken. Love Hina 2001. 5;14:25-7), and when they link hands and arms and hug and kiss all the time. And if the movie and media world is to be believed, best girlfriends have been known to practice kissing and tongueing in private as well. Therefore its not hard to imagine that best friends can often have these kind of feelings for each otherr.
2. They are both in different relationships
- They are afraid to damage whatever they have and the both of them probably have other people in their lives whom they love equally - and thus they will settle for the next best thing - by being best friends instead. Often, best friends love each other so much that they want to preserve the "friendship" that they have because they are too afraid to take the risk and transform whatever they have into something more, in case it fails. And furthermore, best friend-relationships have been known to fall apart anyways - "breaking up" with your best friend is often just as painful as divorcing your partner, if not more.
3. They are related
- The sweat and spit of incest was not intended to be discussed here - but again, this is masked by the expectations and attitudes of certain influential members of the society and also common biological sense drilled into humans by their thousand years of existence. Many brother and sisters have been known to be great friends with each other. A certain guy i know have been known to comment on how hot his sister is, and a certain girl i know often pinch her brother's bum and think that his brother is a real cutie. Although i'm not throwing in the assumption that they are best friends, i'm proposing that it is likely that brother and sisters who consider each other best friends will have that attraction bubbling underneath their platonic family love - and just not realise that it is there. Again the same applies to sister sister and brother brother relationships.
4. They are far apart.
- This is not really an issue because both best friends and lovers have been known to have relationships far away from each other.
Conclusion
My conclusion is that best friends are 2 persons who, because of complications of time, people and place, are unable to consummate their relationship by taking it up a notch into love.
