I'm in Singapore now. Its only been a few days without internet and everyday seems like a long day without internet use...hehe the addict that i am huh... if only now i start to get confusion and increased heartrate and shortness of breath and agitation without internet use ....u'll know i'm addicted...
I havnt' done much since i've arrived. Went to Batu Pahat (malaysia) yesterday for 1 day, then came back that night. To summarise, all i am doing is SLEEP EAT WALK SIT IN CAR. I imagine i've gained lots of weight already =((
Was in orchard rd today. Walked ard in the teenagers area - u know, where they sell those sassy clothes, following the japanese culture and stuff like that - clothes that i know won't fit me and i won't dare to wear. Some of the stores looked like it mite hav some interesting clothes - but i was too scared to go in cos i probably won't make their clothes look good!!
I'm such a conflicted person. Walking ard the stores made me feel really out of place...
What do i mean...? will discuss conflict in next blog if i can be bothered.
Anyhows, back to topic...it just seems that there's a niche for all the pple in singapore. Its like when i look ard, i can categorise the pple into these categories:
1. Aunties. These are middle aged ladies who are mostly housewifes or hold jobs such as selling bras/food/makeup, ard from mid30s tp say 60s. They like shopping ard and eating and hanging out in coffee shops talking and complaining abt how unfair the world is and how everyone is stupid and mean to them. They talk fast and have a thick face - are demanding, and will want to know every single detail abt things that doesn't concern them. Very nosy. Will chat to you on the bus and interrogate you.
2. Students. These are noticeable youngsters in full uniform (complete with name badge), or students in half uniform (like jeans + t-shirt with their school's name printed on it). They can be seen in most places - hanging ard the shopping centre, in foodcourts, waiting at busstops. They usually hang out in gangs - a group of them. Most noticeably girls - they tend to have similar hair, have this dull life-is-all-abt-sch look that glows the message: if you don't go to a secondary sch u r not cool. Girls tend to talk very fast abt random things like cute guys to their friend's friend's boyfriend. Guys tend to stink. If seen alone, students are either in earphone, are playing with their phone (game or sms), or doing both at the same time (and maybe talking to their friends at the same time too). Another note abt thesee students is that those ard my height (i.e. 170cm) are probably people in primary 4-5. They have either just started to grow or puberty has hit them HARD~
3. Elderly. These are generally nice pple who sit in hawker centres all day drinking coffee or wander ard in the MRT or buses. These are the people who have old loud phones who tend to let their phones ring long and loudly in the MRT or bus and is oblivious to it. They also tend to have little kids (2-5yrs old) hanging ard their feet begging to eat icecream while they threaten to throw them into the nearest rubbish bin.
4. Professionals.
a) Young: These are the so-called yuppies - dressed in their best suits complete wif dazzling hair and posh shoes. Some look like they'r cut out of fashion magazines while some just look plain untidy. But most have flashy cellphones and they are the ones constantly on the phone. Their phones are probably constantly ringing too.
b) Middle aged: These poeple can usually be seen sitting in the MRT or buses reading books/magazines. They walk ard with a stride that suggests some kind of self-imposed importance - e.g. the "i'm-a-teacher-if-u-dun-respect-me-i'll-beat-u" stride. Most are neatly dressed in predictable clothes - medium length skirts and blouses or just normal looking suits.
c) Middle-aged to elderly uncles. These pple usually wear floral shirts complete with brown teeth and hands from the constant cigarette use or drinking beer. They are the richest pple described so far, even tho they look like they live in the hawker centres' toilets. They DO surprise you with expensive phones (altho they mostly just call with me and is ignorant of other functions). But watch out - these pple are the ones with the shiny S class benz who live in penthouses of posh condos or bungalows. Either that or they are probably factory workers/toilet cleaners.
4. Children. What can i say? they are usually followed by their mum or maid, who will carry their sch bag for them. Mums will constantly ask them wat they want to eat, and constantly buy them food. The children will constantly be demanding for toys/cellphones (yes, kids here have better cellphones than me), computer games - u name it, they want it. They can also be seen running ard the foodcourt chasing each other. They also tend to hang out in gangs - and are usually related to each other. Their favourate pasttime is to look at things they consider funny e.g. laughing at their teenage boy with spiky hair(real spiky, 3/4 way to a goth spiky), openly and loudly. They will often stop midtrack in front of you for you to crash into them. Half of them will be carrying some sort of bag as they are either on their way to tuition or coming home from tuition.
5. Adult girls. Similar to the student girls as described. However these girls can be seen wearingg super-high cut off shorts showing their turnip thighs complete with slippers and a low-hanging singlet. Sometimes bra-less if you guys are lucky enough. These girls also tend to hang out in gangs wearing similar low-cut clothes. Their trademark is holding their purse and cellphone in the hand. Definitely fast talkers.
6. Army dudes. Complete with the khaki-green uniform and half-pressed hat. One was seen carrying a X-box home today from the shopping centre, newly bought. Tend to hang out alone or in pairs (at least publicly - probably more of them in rural places). Often have a menacing look about them - the "why-are-you-looking-at-me-because-i'm-in-army-clothes" kinda look.
7. Sporty dudes. Dressed in basketball pants/singlets or in some sort of atheletic gear (often in uniform too). Seen all around the clock. Luckily most of them in public are not sweaty. These are also the guys that tend to wear singlets to show off their biceps and are very tanned. Most of them will have a girlfriend's waist around their arms and her lips near his.......face. And of cus the sweaty ones can be found in the local basketball court or community centre, or on the soccer field if you happen to pass by one. For those ambitious pple all you have to do is to go up and challenge them to a one-on-one game and you just might see their shirts come off (if they are not off already). OH wait i think i'm talking more abt taiwan here...but i think this applies here too.
8. Travellers. These pple can usually be seen wearing shorts, t-shirt and sandals, trying to look like a local (and of cus to release the heat from their hot bodies) but either end up looking too posh or too shaggy. Of cus their big travelling bag also gives their status away. They can often be seen sitting at busstops looking at their guidebooks or with an asian girlfriend, again in either their hands or ard their arms. Some of them also travel in families. Of cus they don't attract as much attention as they would say in taiwan countryside.
9. Malays. Not being racist or anything - but malay guys, probably subgroups of the categories i've mentioned before - but malay guys are often seen in soccer shirts (e.g. umbro) with a V-neck and big number on their front/back advertising some beer company (e.g. tiger). Oh and they wear traditional clothing at hari raya. Also tend to have hot girlfriends with nice figures clinging to their arms.
Wow....i think that categories most of the pple i see in the shopping centres/on the roads so far?
Tell me if there are more categories you can add to...i'll gladly do my observation homework and expand on it!
Afterall when you walk ard on the streets (espeecially popular streets such as orchard road, which is probably 10 queen streets added together) - your brain needs some stimulation besides observing how other pple dress..... (and knowing how girls dress is totally useless to be but....)
